Yeah, so, currently, the NCAA regulations for colleges using Native American sports mascots requires that the college have the permission of the tribe in question. This went into effect years ago, which is when, say, the University of Illinois had to stop using “Chief Wahoo” as its mascot. Conversely, Florida State University is still represented by the Seminoles, because they have an agreement with the Florida Seminole tribe(s).

It’s not a perfect system. A lot of the shit that goes on at FSU is still problematic (the tomahawk chop, the war chants), not to mention the issue of compensation, but I feel like the most other sports leagues in the United States could do worse than implementing it given the current situation. At the very least, we could get rid of shit like the Cleveland Indians and related super-racist mascot/logo in the MLB, the Washington Redskins in the NFL, the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL, etc, etc, etc.
